Peter Carey

Abstract

Jack Maggs, Peter Carey's eighth work of fiction, will be published this year in Australia in August by University of Queensland Press; then in England in September by Faber & Faber; and in the United States in February 1998 by Knopf. The novel is set in England in the early nineteenth century and involves an imagined episode in the life of Abel Magwitch, a central character in Charles Dickens' Great Expectations. In the following excerpt Jack Maggs, in order to obtain much desired information, agrees to be "Mesmerized" by Tobias Oates, a writer readers might recognize as a version of Dickens himself.
