Abstract

This incomplete manuscript in Joyce's hand, with a few corrections in another hand, is in the Cornell University Library. It contains pages numbered, in Joyce's hand, 11-30, plus two unnumbered pages of addenda. This lecture is published by arrangement with the Society of Authors, acting for the James Joyce Estate, and with the kind permission of the Cornell University Library. It is published in an English translation in The Critical Writings of James Joyce, edited by Ellsworth Mason and Richard Ellmann (New York: Viking Press, 1959), with an explanatory headnote and footnotes.

All of Joyce's corrections have been preserved in transcribing the manuscript to indicate his fluency in composing. Brackets are used to enclose words crossed out in the text; double parentheses are used to enclose words inserted above the line or in the margin.
