Abstract

Title: From Learners to Leaders: A Peer-Led Simulation Program for Anesthesia Procedural Skills Training in Medical Students

Authors: Noah Kos, Ryan Beyers, Chloe Sutlick, Benjamin Sun, Tochi Mbagwu, John D. Mitchell, M.D.

Background: Procedural skill competency is vital in medical education, but limited faculty availability poses challenges. We implemented a peer-led simulation program teaching peripheral IV insertion (PIV) and endotracheal intubation, with a focus on student leadership.

Methods: Sixteen peer educators, trained by attendings, conducted monthly workshops from July-October 2025. Students practiced at PIV and intubation stations, assessed via validated rubrics (17 items for PIV, 21 for intubation; 5-point scale). Pre/post surveys (n=57 pre, n=44 post) measured confidence, community connection, and interest in teaching.

Results: Thirty-eight students completed the program (36 PIV, 31 intubation evaluations). Mean technical performance was 93.2% for PIV and 92.0% for intubation; proficiency (≥80%) was achieved by over 93% in both. Confidence rose 13.7% (baseline 3.65/5.0 to 4.15/5.0), and those highly connected to the anesthesia community grew from 14% to 56.8%. Nearly all participants found peer learning engaging (97.7%) and 93.2% were interested in future teaching. Skill-specific gaps included catheter advancement (88.8%) and laryngoscope technique (85.8%).

Conclusions: This peer-led program yielded >93% technical proficiency, plus substantial gains in confidence, connection, and teaching self-efficacy. High engagement and student interest show sustainability. Planned improvements include grader standardization, expansion, and advanced modules.
