Abstract

This video demonstrates how to consturct an inexpensive "bottle trap" for capturing small aquatic animals (mostly invertebrates) using inexpensive consumer-grade supplies, easily purchased from a grocery store and hardware (or on-line, if you want). Method: cut off the top third of a pop bottle, which you will invert into the main part of the bottle (forming an inward facing funnel) after turning on and inserting a waterproof LED light.  The waterproof LED light that we have used is a rechargeable spoke light for a bicylcle (e.g., by Nite Ize, CB4821). Tape or clip the inverted "funnel" into place, and then place the device (a "bottle trap") underwater in a pond where you wish to attract and catch invertebrates, such as diving beetles, water mites, etc.
