Abstract

Previous research has identified an own race bias (ORB) demonstrating that people are better at recognizing faces from their own racial group than faces from other races. However, the most widely used tests of facial recognition memory use exclusively White actors for stimulus images (e.g., Warrington Recognition Memory Test for Faces; RMT-F). This study shares psychometric properties of a new Multicultural Facial Recognition Test (MCFR). Participants were 102 neurotypical adults (51 Black, 51 White). Although reliability was low, performance on the MCFR showed a pattern of convergent and discriminant validity expected by theory: MCFR correlated with RMT-F and a test of visual memory, but not with tasks assessing other cognitive domains such as basic attention or general IQ. Black and White participants earned equivalent scores, and both groups favored the MCFR over the RMT-F. Further, the MCFR detected ORB in both groups. Continued research in developing the MCFR seems warranted.
