Abstract
New demographics that predict substantial growth in the Latina/o community in the United States, combined with a newfound resurgence of Latina/o culture and social participation, put the whole Latina/o community in the national spotlight. The 2000 presidential campaign in many ways has re-defined political outreach to the Latina/o community in the United States. This dissertation examines the rhetorical efforts of presidential candidates Bush and Gore to engage and empower Latina/o voters to cast votes for their respective campaigns in the 2000 presidential election. The methodology is an examination of the rhetorical texts through a Burkean perspective aiming to identify the dramatic frame within the messages created by the Bush and Gore campaigns for the Latina/o audience and the non-Latina/o audience.
