Abstract
This dissertation examines the games and gamelike strategies and tactics employed by Joel and Ethan Coen in both their approach to filmmaking and their relationship to the American cinematic establishment. It suggests that an understanding of the brothers' gamefulness is necessary for interpreting their films as well as explaining their ambivalent position among critics and scholars.
