Abstract
“Grandfather Rat” is a künstmärchen with comedic and macabre elements of resistance to authority. The ways that tricksters sometimes exploit others with impunity—and little conscience—evokes some disconcertion along with comedy, and the story explores this issue. While an excerpt was read at the 2015 American Folklore Society conference, the story is appearing in print here for the first time.
