Abstract
We have previously discussed methods and tools for strategic planning and crafting effective goals. How do we know if we are making progress towards these goals? How can we determine if our publications and our work is having the impact we want? This unit introduces assessment methods, tools, and metrics that help us measure the impact of individual publications and publishing programs. We will look at the connection between strategic planning and assessment, and practice applying assessment methods to real-world scenarios. In the first half of the unit, we discuss evaluating individual publications, examining the advantages and disadvantages of common metrics. In the second half, we discuss program evaluation, the approaches we can use to measure the impact of a publishing organization as a whole.
