Description

As a cultural heritage institution, The Henry Ford has an obligation to share its endlessly deep and rich collections. Digitization of individual artifacts utilizes technology to share tens of thousands of our hidden and not-so-hidden gems—but an online collections database is not for everyone. How do we increase the reach and impact of our collections on the communities we currently serve, as well as those we don’t reach as effectively—locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally? This presentation will cover the development of an institutional “Digital Content Engine” at The Henry Ford over the course of 2016, designed to utilize our digitized collections as building blocks and from them, create stories, videos, digital exhibits, and more, all designed to inspire innovation. It will cover questions of planning (what new resources do we need?), budgeting (can we make this self-sustaining?), and idea development (how do we come up with and prioritize topics?), as well as challenges encountered along the way, the types of stories that have been developed, and the impact we’ve seen so far.
