Description

Social media activists often utilize a variety of forms of expression that are specific to online communities; these forms of expression may be viewed as creative knowledge work that articulates the goals, challenges, and tactics of activist communities. In this light, it is particularly interesting to consider activist “bingo cards,” grids that satirically enumerate common and problematic objections to the work of social media activists. Focusing on activist bingo cards related to identity and politics, such as “Cultural Appropriation Bingo,” “Derailment Bingo,” and “American Racial Incident Bingo,” this analysis examines the rhetorical and epistemological work done by these bingo cards. In particular, the paper identifies the diverse activist functions of bingo cards and how these bingo cards shed light on the nature of online community building for activists, particular communities critically engaging with discourses on gender and ethnicity.
