Abstract

Every day Indigenous peoples—like my family and others, everywhere—are fighting to protect and occupy our homelands, and every day the state is finding new and coercive means of removing us. This struggle compels us to tell different kinds of stories—tales of wonder—that awaken our inherent curiosity and a deep-seated ancestral desire to be back out on the land. Using collage, I seek to tell stories that respond to my ancestors’ invitation to join them on the land. Collage, as an art form and as a theory, invites us to work with the fragmented realities of Indigenous identities, families, communities, cultures, and lands that have been created (sometimes violently, often intentionally) by historical and contemporary colonialism.
