Abstract

The following is a slightly expanded translation of a paper presented to a symposium on the work of Tomás Gutiérrez Alea at the University of Bourgogne, Dijon, in January 2002. The interview with Alea on which it is based was recorded in Madrid, 1-3 May 1994. He died almost two years later.
