Abstract
As a dance technique is passed from teacher to student, it is not only the movement vocabulary that is passed on, but the pedagogical methods of its teachers, the history of the movement, and particularly in the case of Humphrey-Limón tradition, the values that the technique espouses. The thesis records the experiences, technique, pedagogy, and history of teachers of the Humphrey-Limón Technique and serves as a reference point for educators and students who seek to understand the historical practices of Humphrey-Limón and their evolution through generations of teachers. The thesis also features a lineage map which is a visual representation of the Humphrey-Limón ancestry. This chart serves as a starting point for further research into the impact and reach of the Humphrey-Limón technique, pedagogy, and history. Much of the information for this thesis is sourced directly from the writings of Doris Humphrey and José Limón, along with their students.
