Abstract
ABSTRACT EXPLORATION OF INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE CASE PROGRESSION FROM PATROL RESPONSE THROUGH VERDICT IN DETROIT, MICHIGAN by DAWN ENGEL May 2023 Advisors: Dr. Jennifer Wareham Dr. Charles Klahm Major: Criminal Justice Degree: Master of Science This research provides a detailed analysis of intimate partner violence case progression through the criminal justice court system for the calendar year 2018, as well as what factors significantly influence that progression. All cases were handled by the Detroit Police Department and were investigated by their Domestic Violence Task Force personnel. The research provides an in depth exploration of warrants submitted for an entire population for one calendar year with the data taken directly from the police files. Those factors which significantly predicted the progress of cases can be manipulated to increase victim cooperation. This, in turn, will result in an increase in the number of cases being prosecuted and accountability of the offender.
