Abstract
This dissertation investigated the effects of communication about compound crisis events on household preparedness intention for public health crises. The study employed three theoretical perspectives, emergency risk communication framework, message fatigue theory, and exemplification theory, to propose six hypotheses and one research question that were tested through an online survey experiment conducted among U.S. residents (N = 670). The study did not find evidence supporting the negative effects of communication about compound crisis on message-induced crisis fatigue and household preparedness intention. Additionally, the study did not obtain statistical support for the hypothesis proposing a mediating role of message-induced crisis fatigue between the types of crisis events and household preparedness intention during public health crises. Findings also did not support the positive effects of exemplars on the household preparedness and negative effects on the message-induced crisis fatigue. An additional analysis revealed that people responded differently to messages about compound crisis events based on prior factors, including prior-crisis experience, prior crisis preparedness, prior crisis fatigue, and the types of evidence presented. The findings indicated that prior-crisis experience had positive effects on both message-induced crisis fatigue and household preparedness intention. Overall, this dissertation contributes to the existing body of knowledge about strategic communication during public health crisis events.
