Abstract

Problematic substance use peaks during young adulthood and college campuses are especially saturated with substances. High-intensity drinking – defined as consuming ten or more drinks in a sitting – is particularly risky. Recent data indicates that marijuana use has risen, as well. Conversely, some college students begin and maintain recovery, broadly defined as reduced substance use disorder (SUD) symptomology and improved quality of life. A three-paper dissertation is thus presented that explores the experiences of college students in recovery and examines correlates of high-intensity drinking among college students. The qualitative components of this dissertation are documented in the first two papers. These utilized semi-structured interviews and focused on the following research questions. 1) How do students on an urban, commuter campus without a CRP overcome barriers to recovery? And 2) How do students on an urban, commuter campus without a CRP build a sense of community? In the quantitative analysis, this dissertation examines a third question: What factors are associated with high-intensity drinking among college students? For this question, survey data from college students in Michigan was used to identify correlates of HID among students. Results indicate various strategies students use to overcome barriers to community and build community, as well as demographic and substance use correlates of high-intensity drinking. Implications for practice and research are discussed to conclude this dissertation.
