Abstract
ABSTRACTAFRICAN AMERICAN MALE EDUCATORS’ LIVED EXPERIENCES AS STUDENTS AND EDUCATORS: THE MEASURE OF A MAN

Advisor: Dr. Sandra L. Yarema Major: Curriculum and Instruction Degree: Doctor of Philosophy The purpose of this study is to unveil the voices of African American male teachers’ “from the field” insights and perspectives from adolescent Black boy students to educators. The four certified teachers provide researchers, social scientists, teacher education programs, and school districts enlightening and informative information with the added expectation of increasing the numbers of African American males in the profession. This In-depth Interview study explores their journeys as rendered through first-hand discourse of the lived (Savin-Baden & Howell Major, 2013) and cultural experiences (Ladson-Billings, 1995) to understand identity, biases, historical and current positioning of Black males in the educational arena. I am researching in an era where the silencing, killing, and discarding of Black men and boys appears to be commonplace and their failing in the educational system as acceptable. I want to know what is driving this phenomenon and what I may do to create better circumstances. The results reveal further investigation to understand the foundations of African American male educational experiences in the classroom is central to identifying solutions to proliferate the diversity of the profession.
