Abstract
A cohort study of Crow’s index of opportunity for selection (I) has been performed on material from seven sub groups of the Swedish population during the first half of the 19th century. In all seven cohorts the index component due to variance in fertility (If) is larger than the index component due to prereproductive mortality (Im). On the basis of I, the population can be divided into three groups: with low, medium and high I.
