Abstract
The proportion of repeated pairs of surnames (RP) of married couples reflects the substructuring of populations. Interpretation of RP depends on the relationship of observed levels to those expected by random union of men and women. This note presents methods for analytically determining random expectation (RPr) and the sampling variance of RP and RPr.
