Abstract
The first metatarsal bones of 73 males and 33 females of modern Japanese were soft x-rayed. Radiopaque diaphysial transverse lines of increased density of trabeculae were counted on the right side of them. The most numerous transverse lines occurred in the group aged 61 to 90, many of whom were born and lived in the fourth quarter of the 19th century when malnutrition and epidemic diseases were frequent.
