Abstract
Data were collected on four gene marker systems from five Quechua and one Mestizo population in southern Peru. The Quechua samples were selected from populations residing in four different ecological zones; two were from the altiplano and one each from the tierra templada, ceja de la montana, and the coast. The study revealed a high degree of similarity between the Quechua groups, irrespective of differences in altitude, but not with the Mestizo population.
