Abstract
This article looks at the unique relationship between a local deity generically named Dharmaraj, the village in which he resides, and the residents who worship him. The relationship is most prominent in the narratives told about how the deity came to reside in Goalpara, an all-Hindu village located in Birbhum District, West Bengal, India.
