A team of WSU reference librarians regularly reviews email reference questions and creates online FAQs as an aid to patrons and librarians. In the current project, text analysis tools were used to supplement the traditional process in an attempt to better understand the frequency and context of email reference queries. The presentation provides information on the text analysis tools used in the project, and presents several Q&A pairs developed using this process.

Librarians operate in a multimodal environment, where Web 2.0 applications allow us to easily create multimedia materials for students, yet course guides frequently follow the print pathfinder model of merely listing resources. In this interactive workshop, attendees will "cook up a recipe" to transform online course guides into dynamic 24/7 learning tools. Following discussion on best practices for visual design, review of course resource materials, and assignment analysis, we will apply design and pedagogical principles to create a framework, using the LibGuides model, for a dynamic course-specific guide that enhances learning as it supports the goals of a specific assignment.

Taking Collective Action: Collaborative Strategies for Growing Your Institution's Repository

For over a decade library literature has championed the benefits of open access institutional repositories. Many academic librarians and library administrators agree upon the idea of an open access institutional repository and have invested in running a repository. The open access movement has begun to change the landscape of research and scholarly publishing through mandates and shifting publisher policies. Despite these advances, repository content growth has been slow in North America.

Wayne State University’s repository—Digital Commons—has existed since 2005 but experienced similarly slow growth. In late 2008, Wayne State addressed this issue with the creation of an actionable roadmap that involved library liaisons, library services, and outreach to faculty. The fruits of this plan are now beginning to be evident, with a 200% increase in both use of and contributions to Digital Commons. Sharing examples over the last two years, the presenter will address challenges, successes, and failures by highlighting policy decisions, workflows, real-life experiences, and ideas for library services that facilitate repository growth.

This study investigates Wayne State University Library System’s redesigned information literacy tutorial: re:Seach. Seventy-two students participating in the 2010 Wayne State Federal TRIO Student Support Service Summer Residential Program participated in the questionnaire. The questionnaire measured student learning via a multiple choice knowledge based test. Confidence and satisfaction were also measured using a five point Likert scale. Students received an overall average score of 71% on the knowledge portion and student responses varied on the confidence and satisfaction portions of the questionnaire. Results clearly indicated the necessity for future revisions. The discussion will address the specific revisions being undertaken and the various ways Wayne State University hopes to continue evaluating the tutorial.

As interlibrary loan librarians and paraprofessionals work to improve the speed, convenience, and visibility of the services we provide, we may often overlook the importance of our own involvement in the process. Taking an introspective look at your role and overall professional knowledge, with the intent to sharpen and enhance the services provided, can improve workflow and provide opportunities to promote interlibrary loan services to our institutions. Literature discusses the assessment of services and users, but has focused less on the professional’s skills. Assessing your knowledge of your library’s collection, measuring your processing times, and knowing where to find answers can help you set goals and meet objectives to build your department into an efficient and well-regarded unit. This presentation will discuss some tools a new interlibrary loan librarian has explored, their implications, and the vast body of self-assessment possibilities.

Despite the role of libraries in the open access movement, many librarians still need education on differing viewpoints, the vocabulary, and initiatives surrounding the movement. Recently, Wayne State University Librarians formed a Scholarly Communications team to introduce open access and scholarly communication reform. This team took a leadership role in educating liaison librarians, providing campus-wide workshops on research dissemination, and creating special open access week programming. How this was accomplished, the positive outcomes and future opportunities generated by these collective efforts will be discussed.
