"I’m no Oz scholar, so I’ve abandoned a few to mere skimming. But while writing The Swan Gondola, I imagined my novel as a bit of Oz apocrypha, as a portrait of the life and loves of Oz in Omaha and what led him to build the Emerald City from a farm’s scrap metal; so I returned to the original book again and again, sometimes picking it up somewhere in the middle, or at the end; as a result, it remains vaguely discombobulated in my brain—but the novel always did seem somewhat scattershot in its storytelling. The more times I read the book, the more lost I get, forgetting what comes next. I recommend this approach to the series—the parts are definitely greater than the sum."
