Mental health of child care providers: An evaluation of state licensing standards

Sarah Lietzow, Wayne State University

Abstract

<?Pub Inc> This project analyzed the licensing standards for child care centers in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The focus of the study is on the mental health requirements for child care providers. Each standard was assessed by trained raters, who categorized the nature of mental health requirements in each state and determined what type of documentation is required to verify that the state member meets the mental health criterion. Information from each state on several other structural and personnel variables was also collected, including child to staff ratios; maximum group sizes; education and training requirements; and criminal background check requirements. These factors were compared with respect to each other and to recommendations made by the National Association of the Education of Young Children.
