The performance of a multiband receiver with one RF front-end and one analog-to-digital converter
Abstract
This thesis presents a study of the performance of a multiband wideband system with one RF front-end, analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and automatic gain control (AGC) module in the receiver. When received by one wideband antenna and one ADC, communication signals in multiple RF bands are oversampled. Oversampled noise shaping sigma-delta (Σ-Δ) ADCs are point of interest in such systems. First and second order Σ-Δ ADCs are considered where the quantization noise depends on the resolution of the ADC and its oversampling factor M. The demodulation performance is studied by computing the bit error rate (BER) of the RF signal in a single band wideband receiver and by evaluating the signal-to-noise power ratio (SNR) degradation for each RF band in the case of a multiband wideband receiver. The AGC effect on the performance of the system is studied in this thesis and numerical results are provided for different ADC resolution. The results can help system designer to choose the right resolution for ADC in multiband communications systems.
