Synthesis and structural characterization of group 1 and 2 metal complexes containing bulky beta-diketiminato ligands

Janir Ty Datukan, Wayne State University

Abstract

The area of mixed ligand complexes of the group 2 metals is fairly undeveloped. This work describes the synthesis of mixed ligand complexes of the heavier group 2 metals stabilized by a novel, asymmetric, and very bulky β-diketiminato ligand (2,4,6- Me3 C6 H3 )NC( t Bu)CH2 C(t Bu)N(2,6- i Pr2 C6 H3 )], LAr'Ar '' . The ligand is coordinated in a η5 -fashion about the metal centers. In addition, a Ba complex with a less bulky β-diketiminato ligand having an ethyl group at each nitrogen atom was also prepared. This complex forms a dimeric structure that adapts a μ-η2 :η 5 coordination mode on the metal center. This complex, however, was not volatile under sublimation conditions. All complexes have been prepared and characterized by spectral and analytical methods, as well as X-ray crystallography.
