Cover Page Footnote
I thank Dara Goldman for her suggestions for the title of this special issue and Paul Hackman for his careful editing of some pieces. As I was finalizing this project, I was fortunate to be able to attend the annual conference hosted at the University of Illinois-Urbana by the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities, a conference which in 2004 focused precisely on the topic of violence. I was inspired by many of the speakers, in particular Dominick LaCapra (who delivered the keynote lecture), Michael Rothberg, Stephen Harnett and Lisa Marie Cacho. I am very pleased that one of the conference participants, Jeffrey Sychterz, agreed to colaborate in this special issue. Last, but certainly not least, I thank Rolando Romero and the readers and editorial board of Discourse for their suggestions and support.
