The Department is comprised of faculty, administrative staff, research personnel, and graduate students involved in research, education, and service activities that support the School of Medicine and University.

Our research encompasses major areas of Neuroscience and Vision Science and employs cellular and molecular approaches to the understanding of human disease mechanisms. Faculty conduct research in well-equipped, state-of-the-art laboratories located primarily on the School of Medicine campus. Current departmental funding is approximately $5 million (direct costs) annually. The Department is also proud to be the home of the first Wayne State University Professor elected to the National Academy of Sciences.
